Glen Oliver (@GlenOliverAICN), a.k.a. “Merrick,” is one of the resident Whovians over at Ain’t It Cool News, one of the web’s pioneering sci-fi/geek sites. Like many of us, he was introduced to Doctor Who during the modern, Russell T. Davies/Steven Moffat era, and he was “hooked” after 15 minutes. But the series has had an impact on him that even he didn’t anticipate. We chatted with Oliver for our #newtoWHO series.
1. Who introduced you to the show?
I had two friends pushing me to watch Doctor Who (then Tennant-era) for several years – @KenPlume and @Robogeek. I resisted, hemmed and hawed, and made numerous excuses why I shouldn’t give “that show” a try. They finally wore me down – and from about 15 minutes in, I was utterly hooked. I can’t thank Ken and Paul enough for guiding me toward Doctor Who - the show has changed my life.
Great #newtoWHO story. Read on
BBC Home Entertainment, Aint it Cool News, and the Alamo Drafthouse have come together for a big-screen presentation of the newly remastered classic DOCTOR WHO story “The Three Doctors.”
The episode is described thusly by BBC:
The Time Lords are in crisis. A powerful force is draining their energy into a mysterious Black Hole, and they must recruit the Doctor to save them. But when the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) gets targeted by the force, they realize that one Doctor isn’t enough for this mission- they’ll need the help of the first Doctor (William Hartnell) and the second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) as well. All three of the Doctor’s incarnations, aided by Jo Grant and UNIT, must face the wrath of Omega – a fallen Time Lord trapped in a universe of anti-matter, with one thing on his mind: revenge.
In keeping with DOCTOR WHO’s longstanding tradition of transmitting on Saturday afternoons/early evenings, “The Three Doctors” will screen on Saturday March 24 at 1pm - at the amazing new Alamo Drafthouse location on Slaughter Lane here in Southwest Austin.
I’ll be present and hosting the event, which is FREE TO THE PUBLIC and is first come, first-served, although attendees can reserve a seat with a $5 food voucher which can be found HERE.
