Doctor Who star Alex Kingston has signed up to play Dinah Lance, the estranged mother Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) in Arrow.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Dinah Lance will make her debut later in 2013, seeking to make amends with the family she deserted following the death of her daughter – Laurel’s sister – Sarah (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) in the accident that marooned Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).
As we’ve mentioned before, the Arrow executive producers are huge fans of Who. First they cast Jack in a key role, now they’ve cast River.

ER and Doctor Who vet Alex Kingston has been cast in a November sweeps episode of TV’s most watched drama series as Miranda Pennebaker, a “woman of questionable morals,” series boss Gary Glasberg tells TVLine exclusively.
Pennebaker, Glasberg previews, “deals in everything from high end weapons sales to priceless gems. Her connections go all the way up the ladder of D.C. politics, and Gibbs needs her for this very disturbing, emotional case.” In fact, Kingston’s character proves so valuable, she is already being eyed for an encore.
Matt, Arthur, Karen, and River talk about The Angels Take Manhattan.
Oh yeah, and Matt might be coming to get ya.
A beautiful behind the scenes look at Karen and Arthur’s last days on set.
You have to watch this. You really do.
First: MAJOR SPOILERS. You may want to save this interview for after Saturday night.
Second: it’s a really good piece about Alex and all that she has been up to including, of course, Doctor Who.
These days, Kingston is most recognizable for her role as fan favorite Professor River Song on Doctor Who. Originally slated to appear in just two episodes of the immensely popular science fiction series in 2008, the character proved to be so popular after her death that River’s creator, current Who head writer Steven Moffat, brought her back, enmeshing River and the Doctor (Matt Smith) in an ongoing storyline reminiscent of The Time Traveler’s Wife. As the two cross paths at different points in time, each is never sure what shared events have occurred yet or which way the other is traveling.
Alex Kingston was yesterday’s episode of the BBC One program 'Who Do You Think You Are' where she found out that her great great great grandmother ran a house of ‘ill repute’.
Best reaction ever, she is so bloody adorable.
<This lot [Matt, Karen and Arthur] are very different. The fact that Arthur is around as well - they’ve become this incredible little gang, this threesome. They go off and do things together on the weekends. They go to gigs together. They get drunk together.> - Alex Kingston

Alex Kingston at the pre-Supercon Hurricane Who Summer Night in Florida
What an amazing night!
All my followers probably all know this by know with all my posts…and honestly I think I am still in shock.
She was so nice, sweet, and wonderful.
First I got a photo op with her in which I spoke up and got the pose I wanted… don’t mind me looking awful focus on the awesomeness that is Alex. Afterwards I even got a hug. AH!!! I can’t believe I didn’t faint.
Later we got to listen to a Q&A and I got to ask her a question. Not the most thought provoking question but none the less I got to ask one! :)
Then it was autograph time! I wanted to say so much but I just couldn’t get it out. She is a fantastic woman that has inspired me so much not just in her roles she’s done but in her role as a strong female voice in Hollywood and life. I adore her. Seriously wished I could have said it all.
I wanted even more badly to drive down to Miami and meet her again but I don’t have the money to get down there sadly.
I am still in shock. I just can’t believe that happened.
I would write more but I don’t feel well and I have to get to work… :/
I think my life is complete. Today, after being convinced to go to Supercon by a very good friend, I met Alex Kingston and it was totally worth it. She is so nice and yes, her hair is very real. But, honestly, it still feels so surreal that my brain cannot hardly wrap around this fact.
