Doctor Who at the NTAs... Voting Opens for the Final Round

The all-important final round of public voting has opened for this year’s National Television Awards and Doctor Who remains in the running in three categories.

Matt Smith is up for Best Drama Performance: Male for his role of the Doctor whilst Karen Gillan’s portrayal of Amy Pond wins her a nomination in the Best Drama Performance: Female category. And finally, Doctor Who is one of four nominees for Best Drama.

There was more good news for Steven Moffat (Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer) as Sherlock is also nominated for Best Drama with Benedict Cumberbatch up for Best Drama Performance: Male for his eponymous role in the detective drama.

The competition this year is incredibly tough but you can have your say by visiting the NTA homepageand voting for your favourite show and its stars. Time is short, though, as voting closes at midday on 23 January, 2013.

BBC News - Sherlock and Doctor Who head to head at National Television Awards

Sherlock and Doctor Who are up against each other for two prizes at the National Television Awards this month.
The shows - both run by writer and producer Steven Moffat - are up for best drama, along with Downtown Abbey and Merlin.
Doctor Who star Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock, are in the running for the best actor prize.
Winners will be announced at London’s O2 Arena on 23 January.

Karen Gillan, who bowed out last year as the Doctor’s companion Amy Pond, is nominated for the best female drama performance.
She is up against comedy star Miranda Hart for her role in Call The Midwife, Suranne Jones for Scott and Bailey and Sheridan Smith for Mrs Biggs, in which she played the wife of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs.
In the best male drama performance category, Smith and Cumberbatch are up against Colin Morgan, the star of Merlin, and Daniel Mays for his performance as Ronnie Biggs in Mrs Biggs.

Has Karen offered advice on joining the show?
She’s been really supportive. … She came to the screening in New York City with Matt, and when Oswin was on screen, she texted me saying it was great. (But) from interviews I’ve seen of Karen, she was saying she didn’t want to, because she wanted me to have my own experience. I did want to be like, “What do I need to know? Tell me everything!” But she’s been really cool about it.
