Third Doctor serial ‘Mind of Evil’ restored to color for the first time in 40 years

via DoctorWho.tv:

  • Due to a policy of “junking” video tapes in the 1960s and 70s, the original colour versions of all episodes of The Mind of Evil were lost, with only black and white copies remaining in the archives. Two types of colour restoration were used on this release:
  • Colour recovery was used on episodes 2-6, where the B&W tapes retained the original colour information, hidden in their signal. These were restored by Richard Russell of the Colour Recovery Working Group.
  • Manual colourisation was needed for episode 1, where due to the original colour-to-B&W transfer settings, no hidden colour information existed. Stuart Humphryes manually recoloured every fifth frame (out of 36,000!) in Photoshop, and the information in these “key frames” was then extrapolated out over subsequent frames.

The re-colored version of Mind of Evil is now available on DVD.

Matt’s a joy to work with. It’s an education to watch his beautifully realised physicality as the Doctor. I said to him, ‘Jon Pertwee would be very proud of what you’re doing with this character.’

Classic Doctor Who companion Katy Manning on Matt Smith.

Her interview in Radio Times is a must read.

The Great Jenna-Louise Coleman Roundup Super Post.
First: thanks to everyone for hanging in there today as this blog became a Jenna-Louise Coleman Appreciation Blog. It’s been two years since the last companion change. Moments like this are rare so we have to make the most of it.
As most of you should know by now, actress Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced as The Doctor’s next companion beginning with the 2012 Christmas Special.
So who is Jenna-Louise Coleman? So glad you asked!
She’s 25 and from Blackpool. She’s 5’2” and has brown hair (cosplay just got that much easier for anyone who’s not ginger.)
She’s been in a bunch of British television including the ITV soap opera Emmerdale and the BBC One drama Waterloo Road.

Later this month she’ll appear in an ITV dramatic miniseries about the sinking of the Titanic. The title of the series is ‘Titanic’.

She’s also the voice of Melia in Xenoblade for Wii.
You can see clips of her work on other shows over at Anglophenia.
Best of all, according to Steve Moffat, she’s clever:

“I think she’s possibly the only person I’ve ever heard go faster than Matt.”

When she found out that she got the part, she was in a store holding an avocado.

This has led to a good-hearted but comical Whovian takeover of the ‘avocado’ tag on Tumblr thus confusing healthspo/thinspo Tumblrs everywhere.

Here is a BBC video interview with Jenna-Louise Coleman just after the announcement.
David Tennant approves as do former Classic Who companions Katy Manning and Anneke Wills. Matt is so excited that he sent her a very Matt-sounding text.
We assume he sent it before he and Arthur started posting pictures to Twitter and Instagram.

Yes it is, Arthur. Yes. It. Is.
Speaking of Twitter, Jenna doesn’t have one. Yet.

Beware of imposters.
The media had their reactions and the fandom on Tumblr had theirs. We liked the fandom’s better.

Steven Moffat says that when Jenna’s character meets The Doctor, it will be “one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters”.
Also, there was news about episode count for series 7:

There will be 6 episodes this year, including the Christmas Special, then 8 next year. Again, Jenna’s character will first be seen at Xmas.

And Steven Moffat revealed a big spoiler >DO NOT CLICK THE FOLLOWING LINK!!!< which we hid behind a ‘Read more’.
So that’s it for today. We’re sure that we’ll have more as the days and months go on.
Welcome to the family, Jenna-Louise Coleman. We’re all a bit mad here and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Former Doctor Who companions Katy Manning (Jo Grant) and Anneke Wills (Polly Wright) tweet about Jenna-Louise Coleman

The new Dr who girl must be absolutely thrilled ! I remember how blown away I was 40 odd years ago xx

What great news! I was only talking about her the other day. Looking forward to seeing Jenna-Louise in action. Welcome to the family! x
