2013 is a year where “big” science fiction properties are getting a lot of attention: There’s a new Star Trek movie. A much discussed and anticipated Star Wars movie is under development. And, most importantly, Doctor Who celebrates its 50th birthday. Yes, that’s right; I wrote “most importantly” because, when it comes down to it, Doctor Who is the best pop culture sci-fi around.
Sure, in terms of financial earnings or even just cultural awareness, Wars and Trek have the British time-travel series beat. Despite the show’s impressive growth with American audiences since its 2005 relaunch, most here would choose to fly in either the Millennium Falcon or the Enterprise over the TARDIS any day. But in terms of core concept, Doctor Who is filled with possibility in a way that few other science fictions can truly compare with.
Star Trek references/shout-outs/homages in Doctor Who
Being the longest running sci-fi universe, it’s nice to be able to acknowledge a younger show every now and then.

“Is The Master coming back? Who knows?” said Matt Smith last night at the launch of the Doctor Who Christmas special. It’s one of many questions surrounding next year’s 50th anniversary.
But if the Doctor’s arch nemesis did return to wish him happy birthday and destroy the world, who would play him?
John Simm is the most recent actor to fill the role of the evil Time Lord but if he was to regenerate who would Smith like to see take his place?
“We’d love to have William Shatner on Doctor Who I’m sure. He’s a sci-fi God! He’d be great,” Smith told Getty, before adding “John Simm is pretty damn good in the role, though”.

The two greatest science-fiction properties of all time cross over for the first time in history, in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2! The true horror of the Borg-Cybermen alliance has been revealed, but what course of action will Captain Picard and the Doctor agree upon? And will the Doctor’s recently resurfaced memories shed new night on the dilemma?
Two of the biggest sci-fi titles of all-time — Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation — will join forces in their first officially commissioned comic-book crossover. Released by IDW Publishing, Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 will launch in May.
In the eight-issue series, the Doctor and his companion will team up with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise against an unholy alliance between the Borg and the Cybermen. Scott and David Tipton, the authors behind Star Trek: Infestation, will be assisted by Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, with artwork by J.K. Woodward.

[IT IS RUMORED THAT] in May, IDW are to publish a Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover series. Featuring The Doctor, Rory, Amy, Captain Picard, Worf, Data, Geordie LaForge, Deanna Troy, Will Riker and the rest. And that this art, featuring the Doctor, Rory and Amy on the bridge of the Enterprise is a cover that will be used in the series.
The fact that this would be specifically the 11th Doctor meeting specifically the TNG cast has me very interested.

He joins franchise newcomers Alice Eve and Peter Weller in the sci-fi sequel, which is scheduled for release on May 17, 2013. Paramount had no comment on the casting.
While the details of Clarke’s role are being kept under wraps, he will play a family man with a wife and young daughter.
