'Doctor Who's Day Roundup: Who's 'Who'? Who Isn't! - Anglophenia

via Anglophenia:

The stretch of time between the announcement of a retiring Doctor Who actor and that of their replacement is a fevered one indeed. Every possible human entertainer with a face is examined by fans as a potential new Time Lord, then given the imaginary walkaround and twirlabout in a fanciful frock coat, and set to virtually run down a make-believe metal corridor to see if they leave the right kind of Gallifreyan chaos in their wake.

That’s what the past week has been like. Some truly bizarre names have already been thrown out there, including Tom Cruise and Simon Cowell. Then, over the weekend, two rumors erupted over the internet, the first claiming it was a three-way tie between Domhnall GleesonDaniel Kaluuya and Dominic Cooper, the second claiming Rory Kinnear had definitely got the job.

Samuel West threw his hat into the ring, claiming he had always wanted to play the Doctor, “and Hamlet. And I’ve done Hamlet.”

Radio Times had a poll, which Colin Morgan won.

And Neil Gaiman has expressed a wish that the next Doctor should not be an actor we’re already familiar with.

Meanwhile, Steven Moffat is quoted in the Radio Times as saying, “I haven’t a clue who it is, we’ve barely started.”

Read on for more.

I remember years ago … in the Radio Times there was a little article saying, ‘In this week’s episode the Doctor dodges the Sontarans through the many rooms of the TARDIS.’ I could not wait for Saturday. “But there was a problem with the scenery or something and they shot it all in a disused hospital. And it was so disappointing. And I thought that day, ‘Some day! Somehow, I will do what I can to get into television and do that properly!’ And that worked out. So Michael Pickwoad [Production Designer] goes mad and gives us the TARDIS and gives us all manner of things.

You will go to the heart of the TARDIS. You will see more of the TARDIS more properly than you’ve ever seen it before. It’s all that stuff. The moment I got that title and gave it to Stephen Thompson, who wrote it, it was just the title alone gets you.

Well, that was unexpected.

So… The Way Station, the bar with the TARDIS, is about 4 blocks from my apartment and I go there several times a week generally. I have friends there and usually, during the week it’s quiet(ish) enough for me to sit in my “nook” (back next to the TARDIS) and write.

On Sundays they show movies or TV shows and when Doctor Who is airing, they show the previous night’s episode. Today they were showing last night’s season finale… aaaaand we had some surprise visitors.

Holy cow did everyone’s teeth hit the floor.

I really hope everyone was on their best behavior and Matt and Steven didn’t feel too overwhelmed. Also, apologies to Sue Vertue on behalf of the fan who forgot herself and basically followed Sue into the TARDIS/bathroom. We are all beside ourselves to host you at our favorite bar and hope we weren’t too much for you. But then, I suppose, if you decide to visit a known Doctor Who bar when they are showing the season finale in order to watch the screening, I imagine you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Anyway, thank you so much for coming. It’s personal things like this that make such a HUGE fandom feel so small and special.

That Time I Met Sue Vertue. And Steven Moffat. And Was In the Same Room as Matt Smith. Yay!

feministbitchpurse:

I had heard via The Way Station FB, and through various Twitter sources, that there was a chance that Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue would be at the bar tonight to watch the finale of this latest series of “Doctor Who.”

There were three officially scheduled showings: 1:00 PM, 3:30 PM, and 5:00 PM. But then it was suggested by the lovely folks at The Way Station that they could maybe do a 6:30 showing as well (5:00 and 6:30/6:45 are more their usual screening times). Sue Vertue then asked if there was in fact going to be a 6:30 showing.

So I planned my day.

But here’s the thing. Never mind us blundering fools, check out the fans. Two hundred and ten of them, with the top-secret episode within their grasp – and because we asked nicely, they didn’t breathe a word. Not one. Even Doctor Who websites have been closing their comments sections, just in case anyone blurts. I’m gobsmacked. I’m impressed. Actually, I’m humbled. And we are all very grateful.
