Doctor Who battles Merlin in UK's 2012 National Television Awards

The final shortlist nominees for the 2012 National Television Awards have been announced.

Doctor Who is, once again, up for Best Drama. The show faces competition from Merlin, Downton Abbey and last year’s winner, Waterloo Road, which notoriously put an end to Doctor Who’s winning streak in the category.

Matt Smith and John Barrowman are up for Best Male Drama Performance, while Karen Gillan and Eve Myles are nominated for Best Female Drama Performance.

The Doctor Who nominated categories in full:

Best Drama

  • Doctor Who
  • Downton Abbey
  • Merlin
  • Waterloo Road

Best Male Drama Performance

  • Matt Smith (Doctor Who)
  • John Barrowman (Torchwood: Miracle Day)
  • Martin Clunes (Doc Martin)
  • David Threlfall (Shameless)

Best Female Drama Performance

  • Karen Gillan (Doctor Who)
  • Eve Myles (Torchwood: Miracle Day)
  • Jaye Jacobs (Waterloo Road)
  • Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey)

You can vote for this year’s nominees online here. You know what to do.

Voting closes midday Wednesday 25th January. The awards ceremony will be broadcast the same day live on ITV1 beginning 7.30pm.

Vote for Doctor Who in the Virgin Media TV Awards.
It’s up for TV Show of the Year (of course), twice for Character of The Year (Rory Williams, Idris/TARDIS) Best Actor (Matt), Best Actress (Karen), Hottest Actress (TARDIS Karen), Best Sci-Fi Show, Best Baddy (The Silence and the Peg Dolls), and twice for Most Explosive TV Moment of the Year (The Doctor gets {spoiler}, The TARDIS talks.)
They’re almost quite literally up for all the awards.
…
…
(Isn’t there a gif we should use here?)
Also, both Torchwood and Marchlands (Alex Kingston’s other show) are nominated as well.
Basically, it’s up for all the awards.
edit: we forgot the Peg Dolls. Thanks for the heads up hairspoilers

Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, David Tennant, Karen Gillan, Elisabeth Sladen Vie for TVChoice Best Actor/Actress Crowns

We all love a good awards ceremony, don’t we? Especially when our affections are split between two equally worthy nominees, as they will be at the TVChoice Awards, which take place in London on September 13.
Current Time Lord Matt Smith is up for Best Actor for his role on Doctor Who, of course. But get this! The other nominees include David Tennant for the BBC drama Single Father, Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Morgan for Merlin. Wow! Doctor Eleven is battling Doctor Ten, Sherlock Holmes and Merlin the wizard for supremacy. That’s less a nominations list and more a long row in a pub between geeks.
And that’s not the last split loyalty we shall have to endure; Karen Gillan is nominated for Best Actress, and so is Elisabeth Sladen. So Doctor Eleven’s best companion is pitted against Doctor Four’s.
Doctor Who is also, slightly less controversially, nominated for Best Family Drama, alongside Merlin, Casualty and Waterloo Road.
