okay so the doctor who experience was really really awesome okay
Had an awesome day in cardiff! Went to the American Diner where they filmed for ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ and reenacted the scene from the straw with extra fizz.
The space opens July 20th. Visit the Doctor Who Experience site for more info.
For those of you who have asked that we embed the actual video of Arthur, Matt, and Karen at Doctor Who’s new studios at Roath Lock, here is an embed of the actual video of Arthur, Matt, and Karen at Doctor Who’s new studios at Roath Lock.
From the video “Step into the Home of Doctor Who”
via the Doctor Who Facebook page: The Experience will be opening the doors to its distinctive new home in Cardiff Bay on 20th July! Tickets available to purchase on 14th June!
The attraction, which features sets, props and memorabilia from the BBC series, closed in London in February to make way for its move to Cardiff Bay.
The new 3,000 sq m building is at Porth Teigr, next door to the BBC’s Roath Lock studios, where Doctor Who, Casualty and Pobol y Cwm are produced.
The exhibition is expected to attract up to 250,000 visitors a year.
The internal fitting of the building will take place over the coming weeks.
In a little bit of television history newly released correspondence gives a fascinating insight into just how Cardiff has become the perfect setting for Doctor Who.
One bizarre request reveals that the show’s producers once requested of local councillors: “We’d like to cover the city in bubbling blue goo.”
It seems it was no problem. The council even made a cherry picker available so workers could put the blue gel all over the city’s street lights.
Another batch of e-mails reveals that at the launch event for Matt Smith’s debut as the Doctor, BBC bosses wanted to rename the area near Cineworld as Time Lord Square.
Councillors approved the renaming, but for one night only.
The e-mails show the extraordinary effort and attention to detail that goes into setting up scenes for the sci-fi hit in Cardiff, which is the permanent home for the filming of the series.
The producers also requested permission to bring a “pirate ship” into Cardiff Bay.
We’ve got our people on the ground at the Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru (Wales Millenium Centre) in Cardiff. The Doctor Who Facebook and Anglophenia will be feeding us updates and pics and exclusive one-on-one interviews all in exchange for watching their cats.
Which, by the way, we’ve lost.
This is a shot of the Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru shot of the from the phone of the Doctor Who Facebook Page confirming that they have arrived and are ready to go. In return, we are posting a pic of a random cat from Tumblr, hoping that they don’t realize it isn’t their cat.
Yeah. That should fool ‘em.
See you all
at the convention at the dwcon hashtag this weekend!
The Official Doctor Who Convention with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Steven Moffat (And So Many More!®) begins March 24 in Cardiff, Wales. Here’s everything you should know (so far):
There’s going to be Tumblr Doctor Who meetups on March 23rd, 24th and 25th! Tumblr Whovian Rebecca is taking the initiative to organize several Tumblr meetups in Cardiff including ones that you can attend without a ticket! As we’ve kind of said before, we expect all Tumblr Whovian meetups to look exactly like this:
Take pics to prove us right. Or wrong. Meetup info here: cardiffdwconmeetup.tumblr.com
There are TARDIS tours all day Monday, March 26th! It’s free to conference attendees only but you’ll get to visit the actual TARDIS set. Please go. For the love of Gallifrey PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GO! And post pics to Tumblr so the rest of us can see.
Speaking of which, if you are among the Whovians attending the Con, be sure to take photos, livetweet, livetumbl, post recaps and Matt Smith sightings! We’re going to be watching the following tags for updates and will reblog stuff as it comes in: doctor who convention, dwcon, doctorwhocon, cardiffcon,
We’ve handed over “coverage” duties to our siblings from the Doctor Who Facebook page and Anglophenia blog in exchange for watching their cats for the weekend. Follow us for exclusive behind the scenes stuff we’ll be getting from DW Facebook and Anglo (or follow them if you’re into the Facebook or blog thing.) We may also post pictures of their cats.
(gif of Maru not necessarily representative of actual experience with normal cats.)
Ok. We think that’s it so far. Anything we’re missing? Let us know. We’ll be reblogging this post whenever we have new info.
Roath Lock provides a permanent home to three flagship dramas - Doctor Who, Casualty and Pobol y Cwm.
The studios form the BBC’s largest drama production centre in the UK, part of the Porth Teigr project in Cardiff’s former docklands.
It was built following the BBC’s commitment in 2008 to double its television network production in Wales.
The name Roath Lock was chosen following consultation with BBC Wales staff.
The lock refers to the waterway linking Roath Basin to Roath Dock and the bay, and the studios are built next to the former lock-keeper’s cottage.
I will be in Europe during that time with nothing to do and I want to go SO BAD but I don’t want to go by myself and I don’t want to stay somewhere by myself either…
Any tumblr people live in the vicinity/plan on going/want to go with me?
Similarly, we’ve been *thinking* about a Doctor Who Tumblr meetup there. While we make no assurances, would anyone be interested?
In our headcanon, a Doctor Who Tumblr meetup would look something like this:
Except with a lot more stuffed animals. And no Matt.
