One of the most appealing aspects of Doctor Who is that the reality created within the show is conceptually strong enough to handle the replacement of every single actor in it. This means that fandom and appreciation can be comfortably spread over the entire 50-year run. Second Doctor fans can debate their preferences with Sixth Doctor fans, and no one can be definitively wrong or right.
That said, there are a few good reasons why Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor, often comes out as the most popular of all of the incarnations in the classic series, an affection that sometimes rivals the more recent Doctors too.

Regeneration: a limited edition collectors’ book, including over 1000 minutes of Doctor Who adventures on DVD will be released in June, doctorwho.tv can exclusively reveal.
The Doctor Who Regeneration set is an individually numbered, beautifully packaged, coffee table album including six DVDs of Doctor Who adventures – including fan favourites like The Caves of Androzani and The End of Time, plus an advance release of the First Doctor’s final adventure The Tenth Planet.
The set is adorned with superb photography from across the era and features detailed and informative accounts of each regeneration. The collection features each Doctor’s iconic regeneration episode; from the First Doctor played by William Hartnell, exhausted after battling the Cybermen to Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor suffering from radiation that had been unleashed by the Great One; and from the spectacular transformation of the Ninth Doctor to David Tennant’s emotional farewell as the Tenth.
And if that wasn’t enough, new to DVD is The Tenth Planet featuring the Doctor’s first regeneration – beautifully restored with the missing fourth episode now brought to life with stunning animation. Utilising the original soundtrack, off-screen photographs and a short surviving sequence of the Doctor’s regeneration the episode has been now reconstructed in animated form, incorporating the restored version of the surviving sequence.
This weekend – Saturday at 8/7c on BBCAMERICA – we get to have a proper rummage around in the bowels of the TARDIS, in the Doctor Who adventure that is helpfully titled Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS.
Which has, of course, prompted a whole series of discussions debating the relative worth of previous trips in and around this most mysterious of blue boxes. The Doctor’s TARDIS has been a subject of fascination and debate ever since the chameleon circuit first got stuck, when hiding as a police box in 1963, and the Doctor’s granddaughter’s teachers stumbled into a whole new world. It remains as iconic and enigmatic now as it did then, from the little lamp on top to the hexagonal console inside.

Also in attendance, however, were Anneke Wills (1960s companion Polly), and Brian and Sadie Miller, husband and daughter of Elisabeth Sladen, who died almost exactly two years ago. Before her latterday success with The Sarah Jane Adventures, Sladen was a key figure in the Tom Baker period and, as a tribute, a clip was played of her in buoyant form at a BFI event from 2010.
