@Markgatiss: Farewell to the great Ray Cusick. His passing is especially sad in this anniversary year but his creation remains immortal. Daleks forever!
Vale Raymond Cusick (1928-2013) - Designer of the Dalek.
The Daleks are arguable the first instance of mass media marketing. They were everywhere in the UK in the 1960s. Dalek toys, tea-towels, costumes, games, books, comics, jelly-moulds etc.
Ray was a regular on the Doctor Who convention circuit and always had time to speak to fans of the show. A humble man.
Thank you Ray.

Missed bringing up essential holiday music by an hour for myself. Hm.
Still.
Yesterday we began a short series of videos in which Doctor Who’s lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, looks at the best and most significant Dalek adventures.
We started with a trip back in time to the very first Dalek story and today, as a companion piece to that video, Steven Moffat reviews another early classic – The Evil of the Daleks. It was an incredible adventure that saw the Doctor battle his old enemies across the cosmos, from Victorian England to Skaro… There were losses for the Time Lord, a new companion and the possibility of a final end to the Daleks…

The Daleks first appeared 49 years ago this month when the TARDIS visited the strange and sinister planet known as Skaro…
To celebrate the Doctor’s oldest alien adversaries we’re beginning a short series of videos which feature Doctor Who’s lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, discussing their history. He selects a number of stories that are amongst his favourites and the most significant Dalek adventures, beginning, appropriately enough, with the Daleks’ debut from December, 1963.
