Sorry other territories. So very sorry but it’s only open to fans in the UK. Read more about the Sonic Screwdriver remote control here.
While you can program it by pointing your existing remote at the IR sensor in the tip and matching movements with button presses, there’s much, much more to the Sonic Screwdriver than, perhaps, even The Wand before it.
For starters, one of its modes allows you to access a well-stocked audio bank of sound effects from Doctor Who series past and present. Flick the remote one way and you’ll get a beep or clip, the other a different one, twist another, and so on. There are 13 sound effects in total, which is definitely lucky for some.
There are several other modes too, each accessible through a sequence of quick or long presses of the Sonic Screwdriver’s only button (on the bottom). There’s a quiet control mode that offers an alternative to the normal ones that accompany movements with authorised audio clips. And you can lock your remote with a pin - again, entered through numbers of button presses.
If somebody then tries to use the Screwdriver without unlocking, it will sound a Doctor Who-style alarm.
The Wand Company has also added a few Easter Eggs for fans who wish to fiddle. We won’t give away any major spoilers, save for one: leave your Sonic Screwdriver stationary but switched on for a minute and it will transmit a morse code message. We’ll leave you to find out what it says, and to look for others.

We’re excited to share this one. A sonic screwdriver television universal remote.
Can we say that one more time? A SONIC SCREWDRIVER UNIVERSAL REMOTE(!!!)
The Wand Company - known for developing the World’s first infrared remote control magic wand and BBC Worldwide today reveal a must-have accessory for Doctor Who fans – the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control. Join BBC Worldwide in the North American unveiling of the remote control at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, in BBC AMERICA booth #3629 starting preview night July 11 through the end of Comic Con.
A high quality metal replica of the Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver currently used by the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, the new Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control is a gesture-based universal remote control that utilises infrared (IR) technology to manipulate almost all earth-based home entertainment systems - from TVs and iPod docks to DVD/Blu-ray players and beyond.
With a green flashing tip and an impressive four operational modes – including a practice mode – and three memory banks, a total of 39 commands can be stored in the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, giving the option of operating multiple home entertainment devices with just a different flick of the wrist.
We just played with it at the BBC America booth and it’s pretty easy to use. It’s also really really cool.
It goes on sale August 31, 2012 exclusively for the first 60 days at ThinkGeek and the BBC America Shop in the US, and Forbidden Planet and Firebox.com in the UK.
In the meantime, stop by the BBC America booth (#3629) at San Diego Comic Con to check it out.
