A new character to be introduced in the new season of Doctor Who, meet Danny Pink played by Samuel Anderson.

Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey) is set to join the cast of Doctor Who as a recurring character in the new season, which will also introduce Peter Capaldi as the Doctor to millions of viewers. Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also teaches when the series returns to BBC AMERICA later this year.
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, added: “For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the first Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first season of Doctor Who!”

Ben Wheatley to direct Doctor Who

Ben Wheatley will direct the first two episodes of BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who.

The director, known for his unsettling, macabre and darkly-comic style in films such as Sightseers and Kill List, confirmed the news to ScreenDaily.

Wheatley will direct the episodes for series eight through December and into the new year for transmission in autumn 2014.

It will see the filmmaker direct Peter Capaldi, the Thick of It star who was confirmed in August to take the role from outgoing Matt Smith.

“I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who. I’ve been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking),” Wheatley told Screendaily. “I’ve been watching the current run of Doctor who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor,” .

One of the UK’s most distinctive film voices with a large cult following, Wheatley’s attachment will likely excite fans of the director and the classic British series.

Great question. What do you think it would be?

Doctor Who: The Next Doctor LIVE television SPECIAL to air THIS SUNDAY on BBC America, Space Channel in Canada, BBC One in the UK, and ABCTV in Australia!

Post last updated Friday, August 2 at 11:55pm EDT

The next Doctor of BBC AMERICA’s hit series Doctor Who will be announced during a live television special this Sunday, August 4!

BBC One (UK) at 7:00pm BST

BBC America (US) at 2:00pm EDT, 1:00pm CDT, 12:00pm MDT, 11:00am PDT

Space (Canada) at 2:00pm ET, 11:00am PT

ABCTV (Australia) at Monday 5 August 4am AEST

Widely regarded as one of the most hotly contested roles in British television, the special’s host Zoe Ball will unveil the Twelfth Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience.

The half hour show will include live special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companions and celebrity fans. Current Doctor Matt Smith and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will both give interviews in the special.

Steven Moffat says: “The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.”

Matt Smith will make his penultimate appearance in the 50th Anniversary special on Saturday, November 23 and his Eleventh Doctor will regenerate in the Christmas Special.

Because this show was a secret until today, most local TV listings have yet to be updated. This may change by end of day Saturday. If you’re looking to program your DVR, you should consider programming it manually.

There is no news of livestreams or simulcasts in other countries. If anything changes, we will update this blog.

You’ll also find all of the latest news on this blog as well as the BBC Doctor Who site, DoctorWho.tv, Anglophenia Blog, the Doctor Who Facebook page, and the @BBCDoctorWho and @DoctorWho_BBCA accounts on Twitter.

The theme from now through Sunday is now #Who Is 12.

We’ll be blogging all day and night about this from now until Sunday and then livetumbling the Doctor Who: The Next Doctor special live. (We’ll use the tag ‘dw spoilers’.)

Update on channel listings for the BBC America broadcast of Doctor Who Live

Regarding the 12th Doctor reveal live show, we can confirm that it is definitely being shown on BBC America at 2:00pm EDT, 1:00pm CDT, 12:00pm MDT, 11:00am PDT. It is currently scheduled as a 30-minute program.

Because it’s a “surprise” program, many local channel guides were not updated with the new information before Friday.

If you have BBC America, the simulcast will be shown. We’re already starting to get reports that Doctor Who Live is showing up on some cable and satellite systems:

If your local channel guide has not been updated, check again later today or early tomorrow.

There is a chance that some local listings may not list Doctor Who Live at all. If so, we recommend that you program your DVRs manually starting at 2pm EDT/11am PDT and ending around 2:35pm/11:35pm (since it’s a liveshow you should give it an extra 5 minutes just in case).

Nine gave away to Ten; Ten brought about Eleven; now, the fall of the Eleventh heralds the rise of the Twelfth.

Only one question remains. What is their name?
