Well, things in my room from two years ago…
The premiere of series 8 is going to bring a lot of new Whovians and we can barely contain our excitement. Their introduction to the show is going to be the Twelfth Doctor with Clara as his companion, which is pretty crazy to think about considering where some of us started watching. We all got into Doctor Who in different ways, and all ways are good, so it might be nice for us to remember the one that started it all!
For today’s #NewToWho post we’d like to reach back into the depths of our memories and talk about where it all began.
What year was it? What day of the week, what time of day? Okay, maybe not that specific, but tell us what series (or season!) was airing when you started watching! What grade were you in, what state of mind? Was there a complex and possibly hilarious series of events that led to your induction into Whovian-ism? We want to know!
And since this week is all about helping new Whovians, let’s also think about some of the things we learned when we first started watching that we’d want to tell a new fan. Post your throwback tales and advice in the #NewToWho tag and we’ll reminisce alongside you all day by reblogging some of your stories.
hey there doctorwho do I look like Clara yet?!
(all clothes come directly from my extremely cluttered lil’ closet!!)
Chillin at my tardis waiting for the doctor. Just call me soufflé girl.
Hullo, Doctor Who Tumblr here. So you’re #NewToWho and want to start watching the show, but you keep hearing people talk about numbered doctors and flying blue boxes and maybe it all seems just a bit confusing, especially since there’s over 50 years of episodes to consider! With all of time and space, every episode that’s ever happened or ever will, where do you start?
Well, don’t worry because we’re here to help;
The first question you may be asking is “What is Doctor Who, exactly?” The show follows the story of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels through all of time and space in the TARDIS, a time machine disguised as a big blue telephone box, saving the universe from enemies like the Daleks and the Ice Warriors. His current travel companion is Clara Oswald, though he has a long list of friends and companions who have shared journeys with him. Instead of dying, the Doctor is able to regenerate into a new body, taking on a new personality with each regeneration. Twelve actors, plus John Hurt, have played the Doctor thus far. Doctor Who celebrates change, creativity, and compassion, taking its viewers on adventures throughout the universe and teaching them the value of bravery and friendship.
Your next question may be “What is a Whovian? What qualifies me to be one?” A Whovian is a member of the Doctor Who fandom, simple as that. And, well, are you a Doctor Who fan and do you want to be a Whovian? Then good news, you already are one! That’s the great thing about Who, it doesn’t matter if you’ve watched for 50 years or 50 minutes as long as you’re excited about Doctor Who and other Doctor Who fans. We might be a little biased but we think the Doctor Who fandom is pretty great! Whovians produce original music, write fanfiction, make gifsets and edits, create amazing cosplays, and have so much enthusiasm towards the show that they love. Plus, it’s incredibly global! Even if you live on a tiny island somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there’s bound to be at least one other Whovian there with you.
Hullo, Doctor Who Tumblr here. With series 8 fast-approaching it’s time to get ready and welcome a whole new group of fans to the world of Doctor Who. To make our new Whovian friends feel as comfortable as possible, we thought now would be a fantastic time to celebrate with #NewToWho week!
For the next week we’ll be talking about the time when we were New To Who, the friendships and bonds we’ve made around the show, what being a Whovian means to us, and how we can welcome more people into the Doctor Who fandom. We’ll start tomorrow with a guide for new Whovians with tips on where to start watching and what the show is all about.
Let’s celebrate Whovians all week long and say hello to our new friends!
Last week we asked everyone to write some poetry using the hastag #DW Poetry for a chance to win a copy of Doctor Who: The Shakespeare Notebooks from our friends at Harper Collins. We received so many spectacular submissions.
There were sonnets written in iambic pentameter, haikus, poems that rhymed, and some free verse poems, all of which are definitely worth a read.
We randomly selected 10 entries to win and they are:
Congrats everyone, and thanks to all who participated! We’ll be sending out the prizes by the end of the week.
Don’t forget that if you weren’t one of these lucky winners, you can still get your own copy of the book right here.
These are the Doctor Who shoes I painted! Inspired by the 11th Doctor and the 10th Doctor.
I made them to wear for my birthday, which is the day before Season 8 starts. They’re my party shoes for the day of, too!
